Cognitive & Developmental Assessment

A cognitive and developmental assessment evaluates how an individual thinks, learns, and processes information. It examines reasoning ability, working memory, processing speed, and general intellectual functioning. These assessments help identify intellectual disability, giftedness, school readiness, and other developmental challenges that may be affecting a person's ability to reach their potential.

This assessment may be helpful if you or your child:

  • Is struggling academically despite putting in effort

  • Appears significantly advanced or behind peers

  • Has delayed milestones or developmental concerns

What does the assessment process look like?

For Children & Adolescents

A thorough learning assessment can provide clarity when a teacher or parent has concerns about a child’s reading, writing, or spelling. This assessment is typically paired with a cognitive assessment and shared in a single feedback session.

Step 1: Intake Appointment

Participants: Parent, or with a child 15 years or older

We gather information relevant to your child’s development and learning history. We also note the difficulties your child is currently experiencing.

Step 2: Cognitive Assessment Session

Participants: Child only

Our psychologist leads a one-on-one session with structured tasks designed to assess how your child thinks, reasons, and processes information. This includes working memory, processing speed, and general intellectual ability. The sessions are paced with breaks in between.

Step 3: Learning Assessment Session

Participants: Child only

This session focuses on your child’s literacy and learning skills. This phase includes reading accuracy and fluency, spelling, writing, and the underlying processing skills that support them. While this phase aims to understand your child’s learning approach, this evaluation is not something your child passes or fails.

Step 4: Feedback Session

Participants: Parent, or with a child 15 years or older

After reviewing the outcomes, we provide a detailed discussion of both assessments in a single feedback appointment. Furthermore, we will provide you with a clear and concise written report of the assessment, including the recommended next steps for your child, such as school support, therapy, or other supportive interventions that best fit your child’s needs.

For Adults

Adults seeking assessment for dyslexia or learning difficulties follow a process similar to that used for children and adolescents. You may contact our team to discuss your needs further, and we will tailor your assessment accordingly.

FEES:

Assessments Fees depend on the assessment type and the time required to administer, score, and report.

Medicare rebates may be available with a referral from your GP under a Mental Health Treatment Plan or under the CNDD- M10 (from those aged 25 or under) through Paediatricians or Psychiatrists. Please ask our team about your options.
