Cognitive & Developmental Assessment
We provide assessments for both paediatric and adult clients.
At The Social Domain, we provide comprehensive cognitive assessments for children, adolescents and adults. These assessments can help build a clearer understanding of how a person thinks, learns and processes information, including areas of strength and areas where additional support may be beneficial.
Our experienced psychologists provide a thorough and supportive assessment process, with clear feedback and practical recommendations tailored to each individual.
What is a Cognitive Assessment?
A cognitive assessment evaluates different areas of thinking and intellectual functioning. It can provide insight into areas such as reasoning ability, working memory, processing speed and general intellectual functioning.
Cognitive assessments can be useful in identifying intellectual disability, giftedness, developmental differences and other factors that may be affecting learning or day-to-day functioning.
A cognitive assessment may be helpful if you or your child:
Is struggling academically despite putting in significant effort
Appears significantly advanced or behind peers
Has delayed milestones or developmental concerns
Has difficulties with memory, processing or problem-solving
Would benefit from a clearer understanding of cognitive strengths and challenges
What does the assessment process look like?
For Children & Adolescents
Step 1: Intake Appointment
Participants: Parent, or parent and child for young people aged 15 years or older.
We begin by gathering information about your child’s developmental, educational and relevant personal history. We will also discuss any current concerns and what you hope to better understand through the assessment.
Step 2: Cognitive Assessment Session
Participants: Child only
Our psychologist conducts a one-on-one session using structured tasks designed to assess how your child thinks, reasons and processes information.
The assessment explores areas such as working memory, processing speed, reasoning and general intellectual ability. Sessions are paced appropriately, with breaks provided as needed.
Step 4: Feedback Session
Participants: Parent, or parent and child for young people aged 15 years or older
Once the assessment has been completed and the results reviewed, your psychologist will explain the findings and what they mean for your child.
You will also receive a clear written report outlining the assessment results and recommendations. Depending on your child’s needs, recommendations may include school supports, further assessment, therapy or other appropriate interventions.
For Adults
Cognitive assessments can also help adults better understand their individual cognitive profile, including areas of strength and difficulty.
The assessment process is tailored to the reason for referral and generally includes an initial appointment, cognitive assessment, and a feedback session to discuss the findings and recommendations.
